When composer Brett Dean was reading the famous Heiligenstadt Testament written by Beethoven, he was struck by a haunting sonic idea that was the sound of Ludwig’s imagined quill writing manically on leaves of parchment paper. Based on this vision, Dean created the piece that was titled Testament. The composition is the second piece by Dean inspired by Beethoven. The folkloristic piece Concert Romanesc by György Ligeti will culminate the folk theme for this year’s Summer Sounds 2019.

The sixth symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven will be the grand finale for the festival taking the audience close to nature, its strength and fragility. The composer himself described his relationship with nature by saying “I love a tree more than a man”.
